i start by placing a sheet of 1/8" thick aluminum in the sandy desert beach outside my studio. i then select an instrument i will use to deliver a semi-controlled impact. when impacted, the aluminum's elastic nature displaces against the sand. i then sandblast and powdercoat the side which was face down during impact - presenting a convex, fabric-like bulge
aiming for the center, i delivered a single blow to this 12" square sheet with one of richard's heavier sledge hammers
